This 1,098 carat diamond is the largest gem-quality gem discovered in Debswana’s history.
The Botswana diamond company Debswana said it found a 1,098 carat diamond, calling it the third largest diamond in the world.
The stone was discovered on June 1 and was shown to President Mokvezi Masisi in the capital Gaborone on Wednesday.
“It is considered the third largest gem discovery in the world,” said Lynette Armstrong, managing director of Debswana.
“Rare and extraordinary stones… are of great significance in the context of diamonds and Botswana,” she said. “It brings hope to countries that are struggling.”
This is also the largest gem-grade gem discovered in the company’s history. The company is a joint venture between the government and the global diamond giant De Beers.
The largest diamond found in the world is the 3,106-carat Cullinan diamond, which was discovered in South Africa in 1905.
The second largest is the 1,109-carat Lesedi La Rona, a tennis-sized diamond that was discovered in Karowe, northeast Botswana in 2015.
Botswana is Africa’s leading diamond producer.
